Emergencies

Call Pitt Police at 412-624-2121 immediately, or 9-1-1 if you are off campus.

The Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) offers safety tips for the winter storm, with additional guidance on what to do when the power goes out, recognizing the signs of hypothermia and frostbite, and what emergency supplies you should have on hand.

Allegheny County offers guidance to residents for snow/ice issues, shelter assistance, basic needs, and more.

The National Weather Service NWS Pittsburgh has issued the following Winter Weather Messages:

UPDATE: January 25, 2026 8:43AM

WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL NOON EST MONDAY... 

WHAT...Heavy snow and mixed precipitation. Total snow accumulations between 9 and 14 inches and ice accumulations around a light glaze for areas southeast of Pittsburgh. 

WHERE...Portions of east central Ohio, northwest, southwest, and western Pennsylvania, and northern and the northern panhandle of West Virginia. 

WHEN...Until noon EST Monday. 

IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult to impossible. The hazardous conditions will impact the Monday morning commute. 

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Persons should consider delaying all travel. Motorists should use extreme caution if travel is absolutely necessary.

EXTREME COLD WATCH IN EFFECT FROM MONDAY EVENING THROUGH TUESDAY AFTERNOON... 

WHAT...Dangerously cold wind chills as low as 25 below zero possible. 

WHERE...Portions of east central Ohio, northwest, southwest, and western Pennsylvania, and northern and the northern panhandle of West Virginia. 

WHEN...From Monday evening through Tuesday afternoon. 

IMPACTS...The dangerously cold wind chills as low as 25 below zero could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. 

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Dress in layers including a hat, face mask, and gloves if you must go outside. To prevent water pipes from freezing; wrap or drain or allow them to drip slowly. Keep pets indoors as much as possible.
