Training & Programs

The University of Pittsburgh offers a number of crime prevention and security awareness programs designed to inform students and employees about campus security procedures and practices and to encourage students and employees to be responsible for their own security and the security of others. Programs include the following:

SAFE Self-Defense Program

SAFE is a free, two-hour, program designed to teach situational awareness, basic self-defense skills and tactics, and to empower students, staff and faculty during emergency and potentially life-threatening situations.

Active Killer Training

Pitt Police officers present Active Killer Training upon request to staff and faculty. This training is modeled after the U.S. Department of Homeland Security video Run, Hide, Fight, which offers tips to the campus community on how to survive an active shooter or workplace violence incident.

Citizens Police Academy

Every fall and spring term, the Pitt Police host the Citizens Police Academy. The goal is to expand partnerships between citizens and police through training and education. This is a unique 10-week program designed to educate the public about the criminal justice system and provide insight about everyday police work.

See Something, Say Something campaign

The See Something, Say Something campaign is a collaborative effort to encourage students, staff, and faculty to report any and all suspicious activity to either the Pitt Police or the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police.

Welcome Week Training

Various programs are offered to first-year students and their families during Welcome Week. These programs include The Tipping Point, Bystander Intervention Training, and parent discussion panels. Attendees are given campus safety tips, the University’s Medical Amnesty procedure, information about the Rave Guardian App, and more.

Environmental Health and Safety Programs

Environmental Health and Safety provides training for all faculty, staff, and students on many topics related to safety, fire safety, lab safety, and the environment. Training may be offered online or as a live training session.

CPR / AED Training

Knowing how to perform CPR and operate an AED can make a significant difference during emergencies. While Pitt does not offer training directly, we encourage you to explore various training options and resources available in your community.
