Injuries have specific reporting requirements and treatment sites based on the type of injury. View the following pages for applicable instruction:

Injuries involving exposure to blood borne pathogens, bodily fluids, chemicals, or animals:
- Remove contaminated PPE.
- Flush out exposed area (eye, nose mouth, or body) contamination using an eye wash station, drench hose, or emergency shower for 15 minutes.

- Cuts or punctures should have the affected area cleaned with soap and water for 15 minutes.
- Obtain prompt medical treatment.
- Fill out an Incident Report Form
Staff and Faculty Injuries
For work-related injury or illness:
- First seek appropriate medical treatment
- Notify your supervisor and call WorkPartners at 1-800-633-1197 (24/7)
- Fill out an Incident Report Form
- Medical care must be provided by one of the designated providers for 90 days.
- In case of an emergency, you may seek treatment at the closest Emergency Department for your initial care, but additional medical treatment must be obtained by one of the designated providers.
- Note to Supervisors: If the employee is incapacitated, you must make sure a claim is called in to WorkPartners.

After treatment:
- Notify Supervisor and WorkPartners (if they haven’t already been notified)
- Submit Pitt's Incident Report Form (PDF) to Pitt EH&S at safety@pitt.edu or Fax: 412-642-8524
- If the accident involved a “Sharp” such as a needle or scalpel, a Sharps Injury Report (PDF) must also be completed.
- If the accident involved Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acids, an IBC Incident Report must also be completed.

Medical Emergency: If emergency medical attention is needed (or requested by the injured student) immediately call Pitt Police at 412-624-2121.
