Crime Prevention Tips

Familiarize yourself with some basic guidelines that may help prevent a crime before it even happens. Here are some crime prevention tips that may just help you avoid a potentially dangerous situation:

Trust your instincts: If you feel uncomfortable in a place or situation, leave. Notify the police if necessary.

  • Report suspicious persons and crime incidents promptly.
  • Go to a public places
  • Lock windows and doors.
  • When traveling at night, walk with friends.
  • Avoid using devices that impair your hearing or sight while walking.
  • Do not approach suspicious persons or vehicles. 
  • Use the University Shuttle or SafeRider service when possible (412-648-2255).
  • Be aware of your surroundings
  • Walk in well-lit areas
  • Walk with confidence
  • Stay on main roads when possible
  • Install CompuTrace/LoJack for laptop security
  • Avoid leaving valuables unattended
  • Personalize your book on a page of your choice
  • Use ATM machines during daylight hours
  • Use Pitt Funds instead of cash
  • Become familiar with your neighbors and the neighborhood
  • Avoid leaving valuables in plain site from a car or through windows 
  • Use good judgment, passive behavior is acceptable. If you feel threatened, give up your belongings
  • “Rob the robber” of their next crime “become a good witness”
    • Remain calm and be observant
    • Call the police immediately from a safe place
    • Give description and the direction of flight
