Chemical Hygiene

Target Audience: Chemical Hygiene Training is required for employees working in University of Pittsburgh laboratories where chemicals are being used.

Description: This training meets the requirements of the OSHA Standard on "Occupational Exposures to Hazardous Chemicals in Laboratories" (29CFR 1910.1450) and the University's requirements for Chemical Hygiene training. Additional safety training by your Department, Principal Investigator, or Lab Supervisor is also required to address the specific protocols or hazards in your laboratory. This training must be documented. Additional safety training should also be conducted as new chemicals, processes, and/or equipment are introduced.

Training Requirements: Initial training must be completed prior to any work in a laboratory that may expose a worker to chemicals. This initial training should be conducted through In-Person/live sessions. Chemical Hygiene training is required tri-annually.

In-Person Training

Chemical Hygiene Training is approximately 90 minutes. No registration is required.

Formaldehyde Awareness Training can be provided following Chemical Hygiene upon request.

Click the” View Courses” button for the University of Pittsburgh.

CITI Institutional Courses website page

  1. Click on the “Learner Tools” link (or scroll to the bottom).
  2. Click “Add a Course."
  3. Answer the onboarding questions and proceed to the list of courses.
  4. Courses are organized by Human Research, Animal Research, and Other Courses. Chem Hygiene training can be found under “Other” at the bottom of the page.
  5. Check the box for "Chemical Hygiene for Lab Workers"
  6. Click the Next button and you will be enrolled in the course. 
  7. It will be added as a training under listed under "Courses Ready to Begin." Click the "Chemical Hygiene" training link to start the module.
