2023 Friends of Public Safety: Julie Bannister

The University of Pittsburgh's Office of Public Safety and Emergency Management proudly announces that Julie Bannister, Assistant Vice Chancellor, Auxiliary Services of the Office of Business, Hospitality and Auxiliary Services, has been named its Friend of Public Safety for 2023.

Julie Bannister is an essential person at Pitt. Her role in Auxiliary Services extends to every corner of the University. Her team handles student move-ins, residence halls, dining facility operations, and the Panther Central ID Center.

Julie's willingness to cooperate and promote synergy between departments makes her a good friend of Public Safety. She is a team leader and includes the Office of Public Safety and Emergency Management in essential decision-making processes, e.g., ISD and the Police. Julie has a good sense and understanding of security, safety, and policing and makes herself and staff available during emergencies.

Julie does everything with a smile and sharp wit. She is the person to whom the 'buck stops,' yet she always provides practical solutions to get the job done. Julie is mild-tempered and has a great character that makes communicating with her pleasant. She is always enthusiastic about helping, very organized, and does everything with a smile.   

In recognition of her outstanding dedication, problem-solving prowess, and ever-present positivity, Julie Bannister is honored as a 'Friend of Public Safety' at the University of Pittsburgh.

Dorsey Wheeler, a dedicated custodian at the University of Pittsburgh's Office of Public Safety and Emergency Management (PSEM), was honored posthumously as the inaugural recipient of the Friend of Public Safety Award. Vice Chancellor Ted Fritz presented this award to Wheeler's wife, Cindy, recognizing Dorsey's exceptional character, work ethic, and his significant, though often unheralded, contributions to the university community.
