In accordance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (“Clery Act”), when certain crimes occur on or near the University of Pittsburgh campus, the Pitt Police Department will issue a crime alert to notify the community.
As per University policy, these alerts are sent as emails to students, staff and faculty through their University account. They are also sent via text to the members of our community — students, staff and faculty — who sign up to receive them; and on the UPPD's website; and the Pitt Police Twitter (@PittPolice) and Facebook (@pittpolice) accounts.
Crime alerts also may be posted at various University buildings, on University bulletin boards, and may be reported to the campus media relations office. The alerts allow us to inform the Pitt community about a serious or ongoing threat and can sometimes lead to tips that aid in our investigation of the crime.
Incidents reported to the Pitt Police are reviewed on a case-by-case basis to determine whether a serious or on-going threat exists.
Based on a totality of the circumstances and a review of all information available, the Chief of Police or their designee determines whether a crime alert needs to be issued.
When it is determined by Pitt Police that a serious or on-going threat exists, a crime alert will be issued by Pitt Police as soon as pertinent information is available.
Full information about Crime Alert policy and procedure is contained in University policy AO 07.
If an emergency exists on campus or to report a crime, call Pitt Police at 412-624-2121. Crimes can be reported anonymously by using the Rave Guardian app.
The Office of Public Safety and Emergency Management encourages everyone in the Pitt community to sign up for crime alerts and download the free Rave Guardian app to their smartphone. Both are important resources that can be invaluable during a time of distress or emergency. Having critical information at one’s disposal can help prevent you, your classmates, or your neighbors from stepping into a potentially dangerous situation.
The University's latest Annual Safety Report was published on Oct. 1.
